I’m very pleased to announce my upcoming lecture in Canada on Jōmon — Japan’s ancient Indigenous culture that flourished for more than 10,000 years. What can Jōmon teach us today?

The Jōmon people lived in Japan for more than 10,000 years, beginning around 15,000 years ago. Their deep connection with nature and their spiritual worldview offer a fascinating perspective on how humans can live with the natural world. In this lecture, artist Maki Schmok（Yamamoto) explores Jōmon culture through archaeology, mythology, fieldwork, and her encounters with Indigenous peoples beyond Japan. What if this ancient wisdom still has something to tell us today?
