“Multi-Expression of Traditional Japanese Beauty”

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan exhibition

浮世絵

アーティスト シュモックまき

For our exhibition Maki has combined for the first time hand painting and computer graphics on Washi -Japanese mulberry paper- to incorporate both traditional Japanese designs and feelings with modern international overtones. Using this method she has produced a unique traditional Japanese, yet, Multi-Cultural Modern Design.

She uses her own personal technique and sense of colors to express her feeling of eternity. Basic colors and traditional designs are used in a very original striking way to suggest water flowing to the gods. Instead of flowing down, waters fly up to the sky purifying the way to Heaven and return to Earth to create a new life. There is no border between Japanese and Western inspiration . Maki’s imagination floats harmoniously between the East and the West .

In her portraits, the faces look very Western and yet they are very Japanese , they have the brightness of Japanese kimonos and the softness of Ukiyoe(浮世絵). In many ways her work remind us of Hokusai but also of  the softness of the French impressionists."
