光と赤の思想 ― 永遠の循環を想う
The Philosophy of Light and Red — Contemplating Eternal Cycles
展覧会「日本の近代と伝統の美」は、外務省による「日本スペイン交流400周年」プロジェクトの一環として、スペインで開催されました。日本から招かれた4名のアーティストに共通して与えられたテーマは「赤」。一つの色を通して、それぞれが日本の文化や精神性をどのように表現するのかが問われました。
太古の人々にとって、太陽は生命を育み、自然の営みを司る存在でした。縄文の時代、人々は自然の中に生き、季節の移ろいや生命の循環を身近に感じながら、自然と深く結びついた暮らしを営んでいました。赤は、太陽や火、血を連想させる色であり、生命の力や再生を想起させる色でもあります。
私にとっての「赤」は、太陽の色であり、生命を育む光や熱、そして絶えず巡る自然の力を象徴する色です。その根底には、縄文の時代にも通じる、自然を人間と切り離すことなく、生命の営みの一部として捉える感覚があります。
本展では、太陽への畏敬と、太古から受け継がれてきた自然観を重ね合わせ、海に囲まれた島々の風土と、そこに息づく生命の力を「赤」を通して表現しました。
The exhibition The Beauty of Modern Japan and Its Traditions was held in Spain as part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan’s “400th Anniversary of Japan–Spain Relations” project. Four artists from Japan were invited to participate, each given the same theme: “Red.” The challenge was to express Japan’s culture and spiritual heritage through a single color.
For people in ancient times, the sun was a source of life and a force that governed the rhythms of nature. During the Jōmon period, people lived in close connection with the natural world, experiencing the changing seasons and the continuous cycles of life. Red evokes the sun, fire, and blood, and can also suggest the power of life and renewal.
For me, red is the color of the sun, symbolizing the light and warmth that sustain life, as well as the ever-flowing forces of nature. At its heart lies a way of seeing the world that resonates with the Jōmon period, in which human beings were understood not as separate from nature, but as part of the greater cycle of life.
In this exhibition, I brought together a reverence for the sun and an ancient understanding of our relationship with nature, expressing through red the vital force that continues to pulse through all living things.

シュモックまきは、本展において、和紙の上に手描きとデジタルアートを融合させるという大胆な試みに挑みました。伝統工芸素材である和紙に現代的な表現を重ねることで、古来の日本美と国際的なデザイン感覚を自然に交差させ、まったく新しい視覚世界を生み出しています。
彼女の作品には、独自の技法と色彩感覚から生まれる“永遠性”が宿っています。伝統的な色と模様を基調にしながらも、その扱いは驚くほど自由で新鮮です。神々へと捧げる水の流れを描く作品では、水が重力に逆らうように空へと舞い上がり、天の道を浄め、再び地へ戻り生命を育む──そんな循環が神秘的な物語として現れます。そこには、日本的な精神性と西洋的な造形感覚が見事に調和し、東西の文化が溶け合う独自の世界観が息づいています。
ポートレート作品では、西洋的な顔立ちながら、日本の着物の輝きや浮世絵の柔らかさが宿り、文化の境界を軽やかに越える魅力が表れています。北斎のエネルギーを思わせる力強さと、フランス印象派を彷彿とさせる繊細な光の表現が同居し、観る者を静かに引き込む独自の美を創り上げています。
In this exhibition, Maki Schmok takes on the bold challenge of fusing hand-drawn art and digital art on washi paper. By layering contemporary expression on the traditional craft material of washi paper, she seamlessly intertwines ancient Japanese beauty with international design sensibilities, creating an entirely new visual world.
Her works exude a sense of timelessness, born from her unique techniques and sense of color. While based on traditional colors and patterns, she uses them in a surprisingly free and fresh way. In one piece depicting the flow of water offered to the gods, water defies gravity, soaring into the sky, purifying the heavens, and then returning to earth to nurture life—this cycle emerges as a mystical tale. Japanese spirituality and Western artistic sensibility are beautifully harmonized, creating a unique worldview that blends Eastern and Western cultures.
In her portraits, the subjects' Western facial features are imbued with the brilliance of Japanese kimonos and the softness of ukiyo-e, revealing a charm that effortlessly transcends cultural boundaries. The powerful energy of Hokusai and the delicate expression of light reminiscent of French Impressionism coexist to create a unique beauty that quietly draws the viewer in.
