光と赤の思想 ― 永遠の循環を想う
The Philosophy of Light and Red — Contemplating Eternal Cycles
展覧会「日本の近代と伝統の美」は、外務省による「日本スペイン交流400周年」プロジェクトの一環としてスペインで開催されたものです。日本からは4名のアーティストが招かれ、私たちに共通して課されたテーマは――「赤」。その一色が、異国の地でどんな物語を紡ぎ出すのか、大きな期待が寄せられました。
太古の昔、世界各地で太陽は生命を育む存在として神聖視され、文化や信仰の中心を成してきました。東方の海の彼方に連なる島々もまた、古代の人々にとって“日が昇る場所”として特別な意味を持ち、さまざまな伝承や想像を生み出してきました。
私にとっての「赤」は太陽の色であり、光や熱、季節の巡りといった太陽がもたらす恩恵――生命が循環する力そのもの――を象徴しています。本展では、この普遍的な太陽への敬意と、太古から続く“島”の自然観を重ね合わせ、作品として表現しました。
The exhibition "The Beauty of Japan’s Modernity and Tradition" was presented in Spain as part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ “Japan–Spain 400th Anniversary” project. Four artists were invited from Japan, each entrusted with a single, shared theme—red. Upon this solitary color was placed the hope that, in a distant land, it might unfold its own unexpected narrative.
Since ancient times, cultures across the world have revered the sun as a source of life, placing it at the center of myth, ritual, and meaning. The chain of islands lying beyond the eastern sea—what would later come to be called Japan—was imagined by ancient peoples as the realm where the sun rises, a place imbued with wonder and born from countless stories and speculations.
For me, red is the color of the sun. It embodies light, warmth, and the turning of the seasons—the very circulation of life sustained by the sun’s presence. In this exhibition, I sought to weave together a universal reverence for the sun with the island-born cosmology that has shaped Japan since antiquity, giving form to these intertwined sensibilities through my work.

シュモックまきは、本展において、和紙の上に手描きとデジタルアートを融合させるという大胆な試みに挑みました。伝統工芸素材である和紙に現代的な表現を重ねることで、古来の日本美と国際的なデザイン感覚を自然に交差させ、まったく新しい視覚世界を生み出しています。
彼女の作品には、独自の技法と色彩感覚から生まれる“永遠性”が宿っています。伝統的な色と模様を基調にしながらも、その扱いは驚くほど自由で新鮮です。神々へと捧げる水の流れを描く作品では、水が重力に逆らうように空へと舞い上がり、天の道を浄め、再び地へ戻り生命を育む──そんな循環が神秘的な物語として現れます。そこには、日本的な精神性と西洋的な造形感覚が見事に調和し、東西の文化が溶け合う独自の世界観が息づいています。
ポートレート作品では、西洋的な顔立ちながら、日本の着物の輝きや浮世絵の柔らかさが宿り、文化の境界を軽やかに越える魅力が表れています。北斎のエネルギーを思わせる力強さと、フランス印象派を彷彿とさせる繊細な光の表現が同居し、観る者を静かに引き込む独自の美を創り上げています。
In this exhibition, Maki Schmok takes on the bold challenge of fusing hand-drawn art and digital art on washi paper. By layering contemporary expression on the traditional craft material of washi paper, she seamlessly intertwines ancient Japanese beauty with international design sensibilities, creating an entirely new visual world.
Her works exude a sense of timelessness, born from her unique techniques and sense of color. While based on traditional colors and patterns, she uses them in a surprisingly free and fresh way. In one piece depicting the flow of water offered to the gods, water defies gravity, soaring into the sky, purifying the heavens, and then returning to earth to nurture life—this cycle emerges as a mystical tale. Japanese spirituality and Western artistic sensibility are beautifully harmonized, creating a unique worldview that blends Eastern and Western cultures.
In her portraits, the subjects' Western facial features are imbued with the brilliance of Japanese kimonos and the softness of ukiyo-e, revealing a charm that effortlessly transcends cultural boundaries. The powerful energy of Hokusai and the delicate expression of light reminiscent of French Impressionism coexist to create a unique beauty that quietly draws the viewer in.
