世界遺産・仁和寺の重要文化財である観音堂は、6年に及ぶ大規模修理を経て、2019年に特別公開されました。その後、本尊の千手観音菩薩や二十八部衆をはじめとする33体の仏像は再び非公開となっています。これに伴い、文化庁と仁和寺による多言語対応のVRアートプロジェクトが始動し、国内外の誰もが場所を問わず仏像や建築物を鑑賞できる機会が生まれました。
このVRアート作品では、1100年前に彫られた仏像と仮想空間で向き合い、私自身の視点で密教の世界を表現しています。制作の過程では、仏像を彫った当時の仏師の思いや仏像が放つエネルギーを視覚で捉えることができ、その体験から、より深く密教の世界を感じ取り、色や光や動きの表現にも一層の深みが生まれました。現実と仮想の二つの世界を通して、仁和寺の仏像や建築物を多角的な視点でとらえています。
テクノロジーによって創られた仏教の世界は、過去と現在をつなぐ「時を超えた智慧」を体験できる空間となりました。仮想空間で、仏教の深遠な教義や宇宙観に触れながら、伝統と最先端技術が融合した新しい体験をお楽しみください。
A new worship method in VR
The Kannon-do Hall of Ninnaji Temple—part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and designated an Important Cultural Property—was opened to the public in 2019 after six years of extensive restoration. Since then, its 33 statues, including the principal image of the Thousand-Armed Kannon and the Twenty-Eight Attendants, have once again returned to seclusion. In response, a multilingual VR art project initiated by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and Ninnaji has created a new possibility: allowing people around the world to encounter these sacred sculptures and architectural spaces regardless of place or distance.
When I created this VR art, I standed before statues carved over eleven centuries ago, meeting them within a virtual realm. Through my own gaze, I seek to trace the contours of the esoteric Buddhist universe. During the creative process, I sensed the intentions of the ancient sculptors and the subtle energies radiated by the statues themselves—perceptions that deepened my understanding of esoteric thought and enriched my use of color, light, and motion. By passing between the real and the virtual, I approach the sacred forms of Ninnaji from multiple, interwoven perspectives.
The Buddhist world shaped through technology becomes a space in which we may encounter a wisdom that transcends time—a bridge linking past and present. Within this virtual environment, I invite you to experience the profound teachings and cosmology of Buddhism, where tradition merges with cutting-edge innovation to open a new horizon of spiritual and aesthetic discovery.
