VRで新たな参拝方式
世界遺産・仁和寺の重要文化財である観音堂は、6年に及ぶ大規模修理を経て、2019年に特別公開されました。その後、本尊の千手観音菩薩や二十八部衆をはじめとする33体の仏像は再び非公開となっています。これに伴い、新たな試みとして、日本国内外の人々が場所を問わず、多言語で鑑賞できるVRアートプロジェクトが文化庁と仁和寺により始動しました。
この作品では、1100年前に彫られた仏像と仮想空間で向き合い仏教の世界を創造しました。当時の仏師の思いや仏像から放たれるエネルギーを目の前で感じ深い感覚が広がりました。現実と仮想の二つの世界から、仁和寺に鎮座する仏像や建築物を新たな視点で捉えています。
テクノロジーによって創られた仏教の世界は、過去と現在を繋ぐ「時を超えた智慧」を体験できる場です。この仮想空間において、仏教の深遠な教義や宇宙観を感じ、伝統とテクノロジーが融合する空間を体験していただきたいと思います。
A new worship method in VR
The Kannon Hall of Ninna-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site and Important Cultural Property, underwent an extensive six-year restoration and was specially opened to the public in 2019. Since then, its 33 statues, including the principal image of the Thousand-Armed Kannon and the 28 Buddhist guardian deities, have returned to being non-public. In response, a new VR art project, launched by the Agency for Cultural Affairs and Ninna-ji Temple, now enables people from around the world to experience these treasures in multiple languages, anytime and anywhere.
In this work, I created a Buddhist world by facing a Buddha statue carved 1,100 years ago in a virtual space. I felt the thoughts of the sculptors at the time and the energy emitted by the Buddha statue, and a deep sense was expanded. In two worlds, real and virtual, I capture the Buddha statues and buildings enshrined at Ninna-ji Temple from a new perspective.
The Buddhist world created by technology is a place where you can experience "timeless wisdom" that connects the past and the present. In this virtual space, I would like you to feel the profound doctrines and cosmic view of Buddhism and experience a space where tradition and technology are fused together.
