仮想世界で触れる御仏の気配
「仁和寺VR」第2章の作品です。国宝や重要文化財の仏像を3Dモデルとして再現し、御仏の世界を体験できるよう表現しました。
金堂や仏像、仁和寺御殿などの貴重な文化財を、現実では見ることができない角度からご覧いただけます。対応言語は英語、日本語、中国語、韓国語の4言語で、どなたでも仏教の世界を体験できます。
ところで、VRを制作していると、ふと「今、私は何を見ているのだろう」と考える瞬間があります。VRは、自分の想像した世界をデジタル空間で形にする技術です。声明や雅楽が響き、仏像が静かに佇む壮大な空間も、ヘッドセットを外せば一瞬で消え、私は現実の世界に戻されます。私が色や形、動き、音にこだわって作り上げた世界は、現実には存在せず、コンピュータの中で数字や記号で構成されたプログラムとしてのみ存在しています。
こうした「形あるようで、実体はない」世界の存在は、仏教経典『般若心経』が説く「空」の思想に通じます。VR空間に現れる仏像や建築物も、実体として固定された存在ではなく、私たちの心が認識することで初めてその姿を現す——まさに、仮想と現実、存在と無を体験できる空間となりました。
Perceiving Hidden National Treasures
Sensing the Presence of the Buddhas in a Virtual World
This is the second chapter of "Ninnaji VR." Buddhist statues designated as national treasures and important cultural properties are recreated as 3D models, allowing viewers to experience the world of Buddhism.
View precious cultural assets, such as the Golden Hall, Buddhist statues, and Ninnaji Palace, from angles never before seen in real life. Supported in four languages: English, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean, anyone can experience the world of Buddhism.
While creating VR, there are times when I suddenly find myself wondering, "What am I looking at right now?" VR is a technology that brings my imaginary world to life in a digital space. The magnificent space, filled with Buddhist chanting and gagaku music and serenely standing Buddhist statues, instantly disappears as soon as I remove the headset, returning me to the real world. The world I created, meticulously crafting colors, shapes, movement, and sounds, does not exist in reality; it exists only as a computer program composed of numbers and symbols.
The existence of such a world, which "seems tangible but has no substance," is resonant with the idea of "emptiness" preached in the Buddhist sutra, the Heart Sutra. The Buddhist statues and buildings that appear in the VR space are not fixed entities, but rather only appear when our minds perceive them - truly, it is a space where we can experience the virtual and the real, the existence and the non-existence.
